Literal vs. Figurative language
Figurative language-Uses figures of speech words that have creative or imaginative meanings.
6 flavors of figurative language
Personification-Figure of speech where non-human objects are given human traits
Simile-Where two unlike things are compared using like or as.
Metaphor-Where two unlike things are compared by calling one the other.
Allusion-A reference from history,pop culture,literature is called to mind without mentioning it directly.
Idiom-An expression if language where the meaning is not easily understood.
Types and forms of Poetry
Free verse-regular speech pattern aka like if you talk
Sonnet-consists of 14 lines 3 stanzas of 4 lines each followed by a rhyming couplet.
Didactic-A poem to teach a lesson
Ballad-Kind of like a sonnet.A lyrical poem that tells a story.Sounds kind of like a song.
Ode-The poem is written to a person
Haiku-A poem about nature line 1 has 5 syllables line 2 has 7 syllables line 3 has 5 syllables.
Linnerick-A fixed light-verse poem of lines rhyming aabba.The rythm is usually bbssb.
Concrete poetry-Poetry that is written into a form.
Acrostic poem-A poem in which the first of each line combine to spell the subject or topic about which the poem is written.
Elegy-A serious poem that is thoughtful and reflective.
Epic-A long,long poem that tells of heroic deeds and adventures.
Petrarch The sonnet and poetic love
Petrarch-The creator of the sonnet.Translated Greek/rome manuscript to italian.
